21. August 2023

In the first half of the year, the Repository Library of the National Library of Estonia has already collected nearly 200,000 items which will be distributed to book lovers. Nearly half of the items have already found new owners. At the latest collection campaign event held at the Loksa Public Library in the second week of August, people deposited more than 3,000 works into donation boxes.

‘The nationwide campaign ‘Give your book a new life’ has accelerated book exchange,’ said Kai Lugus, Head of the Repository Library of the National Library of Estonia. ‘When we added up the results of the first half of the year, the exchange collection of the Repository Library had accepted 191,507 publications or other items.’ According to Kai Lugus, they will continue the campaign, with the goal of reaching every corner of Estonia.

More than 3,000 items were brought in from the last campaign event ‘Give your book a new life’ held at the Loksa Public Library, and the number of donations will soon exceed 200,000. A total of 1,954 books in Estonian and 14 annual sets of magazines were collected in Loksa. Foreign-language books donated in Loksa amounted to 382 copies. Many of the books found a new owner on the spot.

In the first half of the year, the Repository Library has distributed 100,074 items, which is twice as many as in the same period last year (51,305 items in 2022). All legal persons can order books from the Repository Library.

The Repository Library accepted the books into the exchange collection and issues the works on request to public, school and travel libraries, as well as temporary and permanent bookshelves established by communities.
